Blackout period

Definition

The stretch around each Fed meeting when officials don't speak publicly about policy, starting the second Saturday before the meeting.

The story

For about ten days before a decision, the Fed goes quiet. No speeches, no interviews about rates. That silence means the data released in those days, like a CPI (Consumer Price Index) or jobs report, has the stage to itself.

Why markets watch it

With no Fed comments to lean on, data releases carry more weight.
