Chop (choppy market)

Definition

Price that moves back and forth in quick, uneven swings without going anywhere in particular.

The story

On a choppy day, NQ (E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures) might rise 100 points, drop 120, rise 90, then finish near where it started. Many chart-based traders find these days the hardest, because moves that look like breakouts can quickly reverse.

Why you'll see it

Commentary calls a session choppy when markets swing without a clear direction, often while waiting on news.
