Definition
A monthly University of Michigan survey of how Americans feel about their finances and the economy.
The story
It asks people things like whether they're better off than a year ago and whether now is a good time to buy big things. It also asks what inflation they expect, which matters, because people who expect higher prices can act in ways that push prices up.
Why markets watch it
The Fed watches the inflation expectations in it closely.
