Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that hold actual bitcoin, letting investors get exposure through a regular brokerage account.
The story
The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) approved the first US spot bitcoin ETFs in January 2024; spot ether ETFs, which hold the second-largest cryptocurrency, began trading in July 2024. Daily inflows and outflows are now tracked as a measure of investor demand, much like gold ETF flows.
Why markets watch it
They brought crypto into ordinary brokerage and retirement accounts, tying it more closely to traditional markets.
