Definition
When a voting member of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) votes against the committee's decision.
The story
On Jul 29, 2026, the Fed held rates steady, but three members, Hammack, Kashkari and Logan, voted against it because they wanted a hike. Seven weeks later, the Fed hiked. A dissent doesn't change the decision that day, but it shows which way the room is leaning.
Why markets watch it
Dissents show how split the committee is, and in which direction.
