Import prices

Definition

A monthly measure of how the prices of goods and services the US buys from other countries are changing.

The story

A store that imports its TVs pays the overseas price, plus shipping, plus any tariff. When that cost goes up, the store can eat it or raise the price on the shelf. Import prices catch the first part of that chain.

Why markets watch it

Rising import costs can feed into consumer prices, especially when tariffs or the dollar change.
