Definition
A monthly measure of the prices businesses get paid for what they sell.
The story
Before a loaf of bread reaches the shelf, the mill sells flour to the bakery and the bakery sells bread to the store. PPI tracks the prices along that chain, before anything reaches you. When those prices climb, some of the increase can show up on your receipt later.
Why markets watch it
It can hint at where consumer prices are headed.
