Premarket and after-hours

Definition

Stock trading outside regular hours, which run 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM CT (Central Time).

The story

Many companies report earnings right after the 3:00 PM CT close. Their stocks can jump or drop in after-hours trading, long before the next day's opening bell. Fewer people trade then, so prices can swing more.

Why markets watch it

It's where the first reaction to earnings and overnight news shows up.
