Shelter (in CPI)

Definition

The housing part of CPI (Consumer Price Index): rent, plus an estimate of what homeowners would pay to rent their own home.

The story

Shelter is the largest single piece of CPI, about 35% (Bureau of Labor Statistics weights, Aug 2026). Rents are usually set for a year at a time, so changes show up slowly. Shelter can keep CPI elevated long after other prices cool.

Why markets watch it

Because it's so big and so slow, it often decides where CPI lands.
