Definition
A stock index that tracks 500 of the largest US companies, weighted by their size.
The story
When someone says "the market was up today," they usually mean the S&P 500. It's the closest thing to one number for the whole US stock market, and it's what ES (E-mini S&P 500) futures track.
Why markets watch it
It's the main benchmark for US stocks.
