Treasury bills, notes and bonds

Definition

Loans to the US government, sold as securities. Bills last up to a year, notes 2 to 10 years, and bonds 20 or 30 years.

The story

When you buy a Treasury, you're lending the government money. It pays you interest and returns your money at the end. Because they're backed by the US government, Treasuries are the benchmark for "safe" around the world.

Why markets watch it

Their yields are the base for borrowing costs everywhere.
