Unemployment rate

Definition

The share of people in the labor force who want a job, are looking, and don't have one.

The story

Line up 100 people who are working or looking for work. In September 2026, about 4 of them were still looking: a 4.2% unemployment rate. People who've stopped looking aren't in the line at all, which is why the rate can fall even when hiring is weak.

Why markets watch it

It's the main gauge of the "maximum employment" half of the Fed's job.
