FTSE 100

Definition

Britain's main stock index (FTSE originally stood for Financial Times Stock Exchange): the 100 largest companies on the London Stock Exchange.

The story

Many of its companies are global giants in energy, mining, banking and consumer goods, and most of their revenue comes from outside the UK. That means a weaker pound can actually lift the index, because overseas earnings are worth more in pounds.

Why markets watch it

It's the headline gauge of UK stocks.
