Industrial production

Definition

A monthly Fed measure of how much US factories, mines and utilities produced.

The story

Retail sales tell you what people bought. Industrial production tells you what got made: cars, steel, chemicals, electricity. If production falls while sales hold up, companies may be selling off what's already on their shelves.

Why markets watch it

It's a direct read on the industrial side of the economy.
