JOLTS

Definition

A monthly government survey of job openings, hires and people leaving their jobs.

The story

Think of it as counting the "Help Wanted" signs across the country, plus how many people got hired and how many walked out the door. Lots of signs and lots of people quitting usually means workers have the upper hand. Fewer signs means employers are pulling back.

Why markets watch it

It shows demand for workers before it shows up in hiring.
