Paper trading

Definition

Practicing trades with pretend money, usually on a simulator, so nothing real is at risk.

The story

Many trading platforms offer a simulated account that behaves like the real thing: real prices, fake money. It's a way to learn the platform, test a plan and make beginner mistakes for free. What it can't reproduce is how it feels when real money is on the line, and simulated fills can be kinder than real ones.

Why markets watch it

It's a common first step in learning to trade.
