Definition
A cryptocurrency designed to hold a steady value, usually one US dollar, typically backed by reserves like cash and short-term Treasuries.
The story
Stablecoins are widely used to move money between crypto trades without converting back to dollars. In July 2025, the GENIUS Act (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act) created the first US federal framework for payment stablecoins, including one-for-one reserve requirements.
Why markets watch it
Because issuers hold Treasury bills as backing, stablecoin growth can add demand for short-term government debt.
