Breakout

Definition

When price moves through a support or resistance level that had been holding it back.

The story

If a stock has been stuck under $50 for months and finally closes at $53, coverage might call it a breakout. Whether it holds is another story; plenty of breakouts fade right back.

Why you'll see it

Reports use it when a market clears a level it had stalled at.
