Dow Jones Industrial Average

Definition

A stock index of 30 large US companies, weighted by share price rather than company size.

The story

Because it's weighted by price, a company with a $500 share moves the Dow far more than one with a $50 share, even if the cheaper one is a bigger company. It's the oldest headline index, which is why it still leads the evening news.

Why markets watch it

It's the most quoted index, even though it covers only 30 companies.
