OHLC (open, high, low, close)

Definition

The four prices that sum up any stretch of trading: the first trade (open), the highest (high), the lowest (low) and the last (close).

The story

A day of gold trading might read: open $4,000, high $4,050, low $3,980, close $4,030 (example numbers). Candlestick and bar charts are simply drawings of these four prices. For futures, the official end-of-day price is the settlement price, which can differ slightly from the last trade.

Why you'll see it

Almost every chart and price table is built on these four numbers.
