Definition

A futures contract that tracks the S&P 500, traded on CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) nearly around the clock.

The story

The stock market closes at 3:00 PM CT (Central Time), but news doesn't stop. ES keeps trading through the night, so when something happens at 2 AM, ES is where you see the S&P 500's reaction first.

Why markets watch it

It's the live read on the S&P 500 outside stock market hours.
