Tick and tick value

Definition

A tick is the smallest amount a price can move. Tick value is how many dollars one tick is worth on one contract.

The story

ES (E-mini S&P 500 futures) and NQ (E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures) both move in ticks of 0.25 index points. One tick is worth $12.50 on ES and $5 on NQ. Gold futures (GC) move in ticks of $0.10 an ounce, worth $10 per contract.

Why markets watch it

Futures traders often count moves and risk in ticks rather than dollars.
