Definition
The total value of everything the US economy produces, reported each quarter.
The story
On Oct 29, 2026, the first estimate said the economy grew at a 3.4% annual rate in the third quarter, a bit faster than the 3.2% expected (Reuters poll). "Annual rate" is the catch: it's the quarter's growth stretched out as if it lasted a full year, so the economy didn't actually grow 3.4% in three months.
Why markets watch it
It's the broadest scorecard for whether the economy is speeding up or slowing down.
