GDPNow (Atlanta Fed)

Definition

A running estimate of the current quarter's growth from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, updated as new data arrives.

The story

Official GDP (gross domestic product) numbers come out weeks after a quarter ends. GDPNow plugs each new release, from retail sales to trade, into a model and updates its estimate several times a month. The Atlanta Fed stresses it's a model estimate, not an official forecast from the Fed.

Why markets watch it

It gives markets a live read on growth between official reports.
